“…the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not
fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:25 NIV
My friend just lost her husband to cancer. It is always
difficult to see a loved one suffer and then to have them gone. But when people
ask me about how she is doing, I feel confident to say that she will be fine.
She has a solid faith in the goodness of her God and she believes that her
husband is now in the presence of God. As well, over the years she has listened
to the wisdom of God and has built up around her a wonderful group of friends
and family who love her dearly. She knows how to forgive. She knows how to be kind. She knows how to
sacrifice for others. She knows how to
love. So at this time of bereavement,
people are gathering around her and supporting her. Her house has been shaken
but it is solid because her foundation is Christ.
It’s a wonderful promise from God this assurance that he is
a rock that can be depended on no matter what life’s storms are. But the verses after this passage warn us that
a house built on anything else is built on sand and is very vulnerable to come
crashing down when a crisis hits.
