Persevering under Trials

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life..."  James 1:12. NIV

Trials come in many forms: physical trials, emotional trials, financial trials, safety trials. By their very nature, trials are difficult and we would like to avoid them, but this passage reminds us that trials have a purpose and can be a source of encouragement if we remember that persevering under trial and standing the test can be an assurance of our life with Christ.  A test is a way to assess something.  When a trial in life tests us, we are able to assess how much we trust Christ, how much we love our neighbour, how much we desire holiness.  It can lead us to confession and forgiveness, and a new appreciation of our need for our Saviour.

Lord, I don't like being tested by trials .  Help me to remember that they are allowed so that I can grow more in your love. I thank you for the times when you have brought me through safely to the other side, and I thank you for the spiritual growth that came with standing the test.
