The Ostrich

The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully…She cares not that her labor was in vain for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of common sense.  Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider.  Job 39: 13,16-18 NIV

What a great description of an ostrich. A goofy, not very bright bird who nonetheless has her strengths.  She’s happy and she’s physically strong and she has a carefree spirit. God certainly makes his creatures in an infinite variety of physiques and temperaments.  And he makes all sorts of people.  I need to look at the whole picture when it comes to assessing people. What I may consider significant deficits in character may really be insignificant when put up against their positive qualities.
What a dreary world it would be if we were all similar. The risk takers are like sprinkles of hot spice in our world; the cautious people are like stabilizing anchors; sensitive, emotional people bind us closer together; gregarious people draw us into a cheerier place and so on.
I am going to remember the ostrich flapping her wings joyfully and racing down the desert. Yes, she is foolish but she has a joie de vivre that in itself is praise to God.
